Who are we betting on?

The Bite:
All of the winners of our first annual Big in Green (B.I.G.) Awards, which recognize the companies, products, and services that took a smart gamble and are leading the way in the green space. And now for those we're most Keno on...
The Benefits:
  • Everyday/Living: Smart Car. Compact, futuristic looking cars from the folks at Mercedes - they get more than 40 mpg and make city parking easy (two of 'em will fit in one average parking spot). Why it matters: If 10,000 Biters drive a Smart instead of a conventional car for a year, we'll save about $13 million on gas.
  • Food: Blue Ocean Institute FishPhone sustainable fish info service. Send a phone text to 30644 with the message FISH in all caps, followed by the type of fish you want to know about, and it'll fire back sustainability and health info on that species for free. Why it matters: Makes choosing the eco-friendliest fish options at the store or restaurant easier than ever, and if enough of us do it, we'll go a long way toward making sure seafood's around for future generations.
  • Fun: Amazon Kindle. Electronic book reader that saves the trees and energy needed to make paper books. Wirelessly download more than 190,000 titles, plus blogs and newspapers. Why it matters: If 10,000 Biters download a novel onto their e-readers rather than buying the hardback, we'll save about 85 trees.
  • Health & Beauty: Paris Presents EcoTools makeup brushes. Cosmetics tools with bamboo and recycled aluminum handles and nonanimal bristles that don't shed like some of their more expensive, noneco counterparts. Why it matters: If 10,000 Biters buy a makeup brush set with a bamboo handles instead of pine, we'll save enough wood to produce 8 dining room tables.
  • Home: Energy Detective home energy measurer. Lower your utility bills: Use this gadget to monitor your entire home's energy, so you know how much you're conserving...or wasting. Why it matters: More than our cars or diets, the energy we use at home has a major impact on the planet. Knowledge is power - knowing how much power we use helps us manage our use better.
  • Style: END Footwear. Runners and cross-trainers that don't leave behind much of a, well, footprint, incorporating recycled materials and nontoxic glues. Plus, they make you look great at the gym and they just plain perform well. Why it matters: If 10,000 Biters choose a pair of trainers made from nonpetroleum materials, we'll conserve enough gas to fuel a Prius for the length of 130,196 Olympic marathons.
  • Next in Green: Josie Maran. Josie's makeup makes you feel as gorgeous as the company's famous founder (well, almost). And since our skin absorbs nearly 60% of what we put on it, we love that every product in this eco-friendly line is made with ingredients we can pronounce. Why it matters: Each of Josie's products is made with organic ingredients - no petrochems or parabens. The packaging is pretty too - and you can recycle or compost all of it; even her display units for retail counters are constructed from sustainable materials.
