BANG FOR THE BITE
apple

If 10,000 Biters opt for a Prius car service for a 20 mi trip, we'll keep the weight of 76 Priuses in CO2 from entering the atmosphere.

COCKTAIL FACT

The world's longest limo, created in CA, is a 100 ft-long, 26-wheel Cadillac with a king-size waterbed and swimming pool with diving board.

Wanna get chauffeured around in eco-style?

The Bite

Now that hybrids are the new "it" cars, even limo services are offering 'em. Your next biz trip or vacation's the perfect opportunity to try an alternative fuel rental or limo service.

The Benefits

  • Save gas and pollute less. Hybrids get more than 2x the mpg of comparably-sized conventional cars.
  • Be seen. Get around in a hot new hybrid or a converted alternative fuel luxury vehicle.
  • Perks. Some cities/states let alternative fuel car drivers park for free in metered spots and use the carpool lane without passengers.

Personally Speaking

Heather often feels like a chauffeur in her Prius since she's the only SF Bite teamster with a car, and therefore gets to make all the airport runs.

Wanna Try?

Limo Service
  • Eco-Limo - get around DC, LA, NYC or SF in an alternative fuel Ford Excursion, Lexus 400h or Mercedes E320 ($45-$85/hr).
  • PlanetTran - hybrid airport shuttle service for New England and NorCal ($60/hr).
  • OzoCar - hybrid service for NYC ($22-$110/hr).
  • Greater London Hire and Green Tomato Cars - London-based services (£30/hr).

Rental
  • Bio-Beetle - biodiesels for rent in Hawaii and LA ($50/day).
  • EV Rental - all over CA, plus cars in Las Vegas and Phoenix ($20-$50/day).
  • Enterprise - premiering hybrid Saturns at most CA locations later this year.

Other
  • Ideal Bite's Car Share Tip - if you just need a car around town occasionally, consider a car share program.
  • Hybrid Center - check if you've got a free pass to use metered parking/carpool lanes in your town.

Voting at 18, Drinking at 21, Car Rentals at 25

The only car service I can remember using is the limo we rented for high school prom, and I'm one year shy of being legal to rent a vehicle, but since moving to San Francisco one of my guiltiest pleasures has been taking taxis everywhere I go. This in spite of the fact that the city's got phenomenal public transportation, and you gotta pay almost three bucks just to step into a cab (that's where the meter starts). It's a total splurge expense, but whether I'm coming home with four too many pints of Anchor Steam in my stomach or exhausted post-yoga, since giving up my car in November, taxi rides are one of my deepest, darkest eco-inefficient secrets. Luckily, in town we've got quite a few Ford Escape hybrid taxis roaming around and more are being added to the local fleets all the time, so my guilty pleasure doesn't have to be so guilty.

-Toshio... off to hail a cab to dinner and a movie (Reno 911!: Miami)...

Biter Comments...
A few years ago on a trip to Florida I rented a Toyota Prius straight from a Toyota dealer. So you can really do it anywhere.
Heather should tell her SF coworkers to take BART to SFO or OAK. They'll need $2 for airBART if they fly out of the latter. Remember, using mass transit is better than cars anyday!
We used Eco-limo on our last trip back from O'hare to LAX this December and it was great. We had a very late flight that was three hours later still due to weather/mechanicals. The driver was extremely understanding as he had been tracking the flight from his home in Venice (near LAX) and didn't end up waiting at the airport the whole time. Our ride was a brand new black Prius with limo tint. The service that night was wonderful (I worked as a chauffeur for 5 years, I know) but they had problems later with my credit card (they wrote the number wrong) and charged me for $30 more than my quote. I asked why and they said it was because of the delayed flight they had to add some wait time, which was 100% fine with me, but I just would like to know first, not see it on my bank statement three weeks later.
I think, as does my husband, that they have the driving and drinking ages backwards. If kids learned their drinking tolerance for a few years BEFORE they learned to drive, then maybe there wouldn't be as many drunk driving accidents among college age students. Just a thought.
I think it's right to have legal rules for renting a vechile. http://vacationrentalhotspots.com/florida/destin-vacation-rentals.php
well, there's always an exemption to the rule... __________________ www.unitedcarservice.net

Three cheers for everybody for the intelligent, provoking and civil comments on yesterday's teen-age drinking post. Many argued effectively that kids will drink no matter what the law says. Letting them drink legally at 18 -- and under some kind of supervision rather than secretly -- would cut binge drinking and let them learn to drink responsibly, many say. ===================== Angelinjones california dui
