BANG FOR THE BITE

You might have to search to find your perfect match, but the $0 price tag, the ability to pack light and the eco-savings make it worth the effort.

COCKTAIL FACT

According to Forbes, the world's most expensive hotel room is the penthouse suite at Hotel Martinez in Cannes, France, which goes for $37,200/night.

Wanna invite a perfect stranger for a sleepover?

The Bite

With a house swap, if you show them yours, they'll show you theirs. Skip the hotel and stay in the comfort of someone else's own home, and save cash and natural resources while you're at it.

The Benefits

  • Better amenities than the average hotel, with fully loaded kitchens, backyards and general coziness.
  • Cash savings. The average rate for a deluxe hotel room worldwide is $182/night. Exchanging homes is free.
  • Resource savings. Those half-used shampoo containers and daily bedding changes in hotels add up quickly to a lot of waste.
  • Local living. Hang with the locals instead of other tourists.
  • Lighter luggage. Homes have the necessities, so you can bring less and save releasing a pound of CO2 for every pound you don't pack.

Personally Speaking

Since seeing last winter's chick flick The Holiday, Heather's got her sights set on an English home-exchange getaway, ideally starring her and Jude Law.

Wanna Try?

  • HomeExchange.com - the site used by Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet in The Holiday.
  • craigslist - the Housing Swap section of your local craigslist is another good place to start.
  • Home Base Holidays - site for Euro Biters.
  • Be Smart - talk with your fellow swapper before exchanging homes, ask for referrals and create an agreement that you both sign.

OK, so the Movie Sucked, but Jude Law Looked Hot

None of us here at The Bite has ever done a true house swap (mainly because until recently, we didn't have houses where the landlord wouldn't go off his rocker over strangers in the place).  Having rented other houses while traveling, however, I can attest to the fact that a vacation - particularly an international one - is just so much better in a home.

My personal favorite?  Villa Marisa on the Amalfi Coast. It was on the western side of the Sorrento peninsula, with views of the Bay of Naples, Ischia, Capri and Vesuvius.  We watched the sunset nightly on the rooftop, sipping wines from Campania.  Sure, Pompeii was rockin'.  Sure, Positano was filled with people too beautiful to describe.  Sure, driving in Naples was like playing a video game, dodging dodgy pedestrians and mangy dogs...  but the best part of that whole trip were the times at the house, living like a local, cooking and chatting and laughing.

-Heather... off to see how much vacation I have accrued...

Biter Comments...
I agree with you about the movie - not very good and not a good representation of a home exchange. It's really not a good idea to instantly agree to an exchange and take off across the Atlantic the very next day. And it would be good to warn your single woman exchange partner that your drunken brother might turn up at your isolated cottage late at night! You don't have to have a large or grand home in order to exchange homes. I hope you will check out my home exchange blog: http://homeexchangetravel.blogs.com and browse some current exchange offers: http://www.homebase-hols.com Cheers
Love the tip and I have another great website to add to the list. It's for housesitting which my husband and I have been doing for a couple of years. We stay (free) at someone's house usually in exchange for watching their pet/pets. For example, we've stayed in a multi-million dollar home three blocks from the beach in California three times and all we are required to do is walk their two wonderful dogs a couple of times a day, feed them and give them some attention. The website is www.housecarers.com and it's actually an Australian website. Check it out!
An AMAZING site that assists with traveling around the world and crashing free at someone's crib [minus having to watch pets, etc!] and getting a personal tour guide is: www.couchsurfing.com totally safe, totally fun, totally free. CHECK IT OUT! i've been using it for roughly the past year and have made some amazing friends...
I 1/2 love this idea but then again I have friends I wouldn't leave alone in my house so I don't know how well I'd deal with total strangers!
Housesitting seems like a lot of fun and sounds like something I'd like to do :D Am not sure how I'd feel if I had total strangers in my house though.
Lynn, housesitting though housecarers.com isn't house swapping - we've never had anyone housesit for us - we haven't got any pets and we have great neighbors who keep an eye on our house so we don't need a housesitter. We just housesit for others while they're off on a trip and have a great, free place to stay for however long they're away!
The movie was a bit too creepy at times with a failed shot at realism, that said, it is true that when we do rent villas and lodges overseas, we will never know who is going to be knocking at our doors in the middle of the night. it is always a good idea to book such villas as well as lodges throuogh a reputed travel company, they generally come with some sort of security blanket. naples vacation rentals
Great article and great comments about House sitting. I never knew this kind of thing existed. Anyway Amalfi coast and Capri is a great spot for vacationing and celebrity spotting.
