Think you gotta be a genius to read the ingredients list on your skin-care products?

The Bite:

Put down the Chem 101 book, and try Kiehl's new Superbly Restorative Collection, a line that includes a body lotion, a salve, and multipurpose oil that helps bind moisture to your skin. Each moisturizer is made with simple ingredients like organic argan oil (drawn from the nut of argan trees) - sans artificial fragrances and preservatives - for skin-care that ain't rocket science.

Company Background

John Kiehl started selling honeys, teas, and herbal supplements from his humble East Village, NYC, apothecary in 1851, and the company's stores still have an old-school feel to them: employees clad in white lab coats, a skeleton (once used to illustrate), and reclaimed library card-holders that store product samples. And with the introduction of organic ingredients, it's clear these chemists have a method to their madness.

Why Care?

  • Superbly Restorative Collection products are made with fair-trade, 100% organic argan oil, sourced from a women's cooperative in Morocco that helps improve the sustainability of the argan forest, as well as fair wages for the workers.
  • Kiehl's works within its communities to support renewable energy to help keep the air we breathe clean and healthy. It's partnered with Green Mountain Energy to purchase Renewable Energy Credits to offset carbon emissions.
  • Kiehl's teamed up with the Natural Resources Defense Council to launch clickforgreenland.com to raise awareness about the effects of global warming on Greenland's ice - Kiehl's made a donation on behalf of the first 500,00 visitors to click on the website.
  • The company prints labels and materials with soy inks, whenever possible, and encourages its patrons to return their Kiehl's "empties" to them for recycling. In April 2008 Kiehl's introduced a collection of products packaged in 100% PCR (post consumer recycled) plastic.
  • EARTH DAY: Kiehl's honors Earth Day every year, and this year, in return for bringing your empties back to the store for recycling, the first 50 customers will receive a reusable Kiehl's shopping tote.
  • Biter Exclusive: Enter IDEAL at online checkout and receive complimentary ground shipping on any orders over $45 until Apr. 26.

Keeping It Real

Kiehl's products aren't "all natural," but the company is working on incorporating more 100% organic ingredients into its products. And while finding eco-friendly packaging suppliers has been tough, two of the Superbly Restorative Collection's bottles are made from post-consumer recycled waste (excepting the pumps).
