Try a 1/2 cup of baking soda down the drain, then pour white vinegar (boiling)down the drain. It works great....bubbles that goo right out..... Non toxic and easy to do...

Sometimes you can even clean it with the "snake" without taking the plug out. Be prepared for gross, however!
